The UW Libraries has books in many languages, as well as the English translation of many of those novels. The easiest way to check availability is to search by an author's name in the library catalog and carefully check the listings. Sort the information by "Title." Look through all the listings. Any translations available will be shown with the English title, then the author's name and the original title followed by the word "English." For example, Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel One Hundred Years of Solitude is listed as follows:
One hundred years of solitude -- See Garcia Marquez Gabriel 1927 2014 Cien años de soledad. English
This information provides the title in the original Spanish, which can then be searched for in the catalog. The word "English" indicates that an English translation is available. If the book is in the original language, there will not be a word indicating the language the novel has been translated into. Clicking the link containing the original title will go to the catalog entry for that novel.
We have created a spreadsheet that can be viewed at this link. The library call numbers of the novels in the original Spanish, French, German, and other languages are listed, as are the call numbers of the English translations. For almost every title, the translated version will be located on the shelf next to the original version.
Another option to view numerous novels written in a specific language is to use the advanced search option in the library catalog. Click on the "Advanced Search" option located under the basic catalog search. When the search page loads, select "Subject" in the drop-down list of filters. Type the word "fiction" in the search box. Next, scroll down the page until the "More Options" section appears. In the "Location" filter box, select "Coe Library." In the "Material Type" box select "Book." In the "Language" box select the language the patron is seeking. Press the "Submit" button. A list of available novels will appear sorted by date (most recent listed first). The limitation to this list is that only novels in that language are listed, but no English translations. However, these search results provide the call numbers and locations of the novels in the stacks where the patron can shelf browse. Author's generally have a specific call number assigned to their novels, and another call number assigned to literature written about the novels. A patron should be able to shelf browse all the novels of a specific author and locate the original language version next to the English translation.
