The UW Libraries do not charge daily fines for overdue items. Instead, when an item goes overdue the appropriate Circulation unit blocks the borrower's library privileges immediately and waits at least two days before billing for the item. The bill has three parts:

  • the replacement cost of the item,
  • a $20 processing fee and
  • a $5 non-refundable billing fee (see the University's Fee Book).

Since the average cost of books we buy for our collections is over $80, a bill for a single overdue book can easily go over $100.

You can avoid a bill by returning an item by the due date. Even after an item is billed, if you return it in satisfactory condition, the Libraries will waive the replacement fee and the processing fee. Your borrowing privileges will be restored once the non-refundable billing fee is paid (at the Cashier's Office in Knight Hall or through WyoWeb).
