The Processing Fee of $20 per item is the portion of a long overdue/lost/damaged library bill used to partially compensate the UW Libraries for the work it takes to replace the item. There is staff time expended to order a replacement book, video, etc., as well as postage bills. Once the replacement book is received, library staff must catalog the item so that it appears in the Library Catalog and must remove the record for the lost or damaged volume. Finally, the replacement book must be prepared for public use, including adding barcodes so we can check out the item, spine labels so it can be located within the Libraries collections and security strips. The Processing Fee has been approved by the Board of Trustees and is listed in the University's Fee Book.
The best way to avoid getting a library bill for a long overdue/lost item is to return or renew materials before they are billed. Processing fees are only assessed against damaged items which require a full replacement.
