Sorry, but the library does not keep any historical records of the books that patrons have checked out. State privacy law (Wyo. Statute 16-4-203 (d)(ix) 1977) prohibits University of Wyoming staff from divulging patron circulation and registration records except through legal process, order, or subpoena through the Dean of the Libraries. We comply with this Wyoming law and University of Wyoming regulations by purging this data from patron accounts when books have been returned.
As further explanation, the Libraries turn off or opt out of keeping historical patron transactions in the library data systems wherever possible. We do this to protect our patron’s privacy and specifically so that the University and its libraries cannot be compelled to turn over this information if ordered by a state or federal agency (for example, under provisions of the Patriot Act).
The UW Libraries use several library systems to manage records. Unfortunately, not all of them offer the same turn off or opt out options. "Sierra," which we use for most library transactions, allows us to opt out of keeping a history of most information. Thus, the historical record of the books a patron has checked out is deleted when the books are returned. Billing information in the Sierra system can be recorded separately, so we can also purge patrons more quickly. "ILLiad," which is used for Interlibrary Loan and Request It, does not offer us as many options. Because many Request It items are tied to financial/billing records, which we are required to keep for 7 years by state statute, we’ve selected this as our Request It purge timeframe. Contact one of the supervisors of the Circulation Department if you have additional questions about our policies.
One way to keep track of books that you borrow is to use the "My Lists" option of your UW Library account. This data is different and separate from the information about which books have been checked out by you. Catalog data remains in your account until you delete it or your account is deactivated. As an example, click on the following link to a book in our catalog. At the top of the webpage are blue icons that provide options to "Save to My Lists" and "Save Record." Use these icons to save the book information.
