This procedure will help you to locate a specific issue of The New York Times.
On the main UW Libraries webpage, click on the yellow and orange "Databases" icon. On the next webpage a subject listing will appear. Locate and select the "News and Newspapers" link. The next page that appears will have "ProQuest Newsstand" listed at the very top under "Librarian's Choics." Click this link.
When the ProQuest Newspapers webpage loads, look for the link labeled "Publications" near the top. Links to "Basic Search" and "Advanced Search" will appear to the left of this link. Click on "Publications."
You can locate The New York Times in two ways. One is to use the A-Z listing of publications by clicking on "N" and searching the list. You will want to select "New York Times Late Edition (East Coast). The other way is to type "new york times" (including the quotation marks) in the search box. Click "Search" or press enter. Choose the same edition of the NYT as mentioned (Note that other publications by the New York Times Company are provided in the search results: The New York Times Book Review, The New York Times Magazine, and the New York Times International Edition. These may be useful for research).
To locate a specific issue of the NYT, scroll down the New York Times Late Edition (East Coast) page and locate the "Browse Specific Issues" section. Click on the "+" next to the years, then continue to click on that same symbol until the exact date is located. Click on the date and a page will display that lists all the articles published on that day. You may wish to click on the "Search within" link to refine your search for a specific article or topic.
Issues of the NYT in ProQuest Newspapers currently goes back to January 1980. For issues of this newspaper before that date, other databases and collections provide access to those issues. Some of the databases for this newspaper go back to 1857. Click this link for a search of the UW Libraries catalog for The New York Times. Click on the appropriate link to access the year(s) that are desired.
(Note: Searches for other newspapers (e.g., the Los Angeles Times) will yield similar results for specific issues.)
