You may place a "Hold Request" on any item that is currently checked out, except for reserves, library-use-only items, and laptops or iPads. When items with holds are returned, they are held at the Circulation Desk, you are notified by email that the item is available, and you have up to  seven days to claim your hold before it is returned to the shelves.

There are two ways to place a hold:

  • Stop by any of the Libraries' Circulation Desks.
  • While searching the Libraries' catalog and the specific item you are looking for indicates that it's checked out, click the blue "Place a hold"  button along the top of the screen. The button looks like this:

To check the status of a hold request, log onto your UW Libraries account. Look for the item you have requested. The status will appear next to the title.

Multiple holds may exist for a specific item, so University students, faculty and staff may wish to request the item that is checked out of UW Libraries through Prospector or Request It. This option may be faster than waiting for a book placed on hold to be returned. Other patrons are not obligated to return a book before the due date. Books with holds may not be renewed.
