There are three classrooms in Coe Library. Two are on the main level (Coe 216 and Coe 218) and one is on level 1 (Coe 123). These rooms are administered by the Research & Instruction Services Department. Coe 121 is another classroom but it is managed by UW Central Scheduling.

The classrooms managed by Coe Library are used primarily for library instruction by library faculty, especially during the first eight weeks of the Fall and Spring semesters. Instructors whose students are focusing on library-based research for a course assignment may request use on a space available basis. Other UW groups may reserve the rooms during low-demand times later in the semester or during the summer session. We recommend that requestors simultaneously check with UW Central Scheduling. The classrooms are not available to non-UW groups. This library guide provides more information about policies and use.

A brief overview of the policies:

Priority for use of library classrooms is:

  1. Librarian-led instruction (Research & Instruction Services)

  2. UW Libraries departments and units housed within Coe Library (ECTL, LeaRN, Writing Center, Information Technology)

  3. Classes who are working on library research, with advanced permission of the Research & Instruction Department Head or the Instruction and Assessment Coordinator.

Classrooms will be scheduled only during regular business hours when the Research & Instruction personnel are available and only for groups whose technology needs meet the classroom setup. These rooms are not available for recurring classes or meetings. Groups who reserve the room may be bumped if space is needed for library instruction.

Student groups may not reserve the classrooms, but librarians may allow evening or weekend use when no study rooms are available or when computer lab overflow is needed during finals or dead week. All groups or individuals using the rooms must follow food & drink and other policies established by the UW Libraries.

Standard classroom technology is available in Coe 216, 218, and 123. There is NOT video capability for apps such as Zoom, only audio.

Please contact the Research & Instruction to request use of Coe 216 or 218 for the type of instruction described above. Non-library groups should contact Central Scheduling for assistance in locating meeting space.

Note: Use of Coe 504 and 506 is managed by the Libraries Administration office. Contact that office at 766-3279.
